Paramount's hitting the campus, setting up a feature development deal with the CollegeHumor.com Web site and Par-based Alphaville.
CollegeHumor.com,
which reaches 9 million visitors per month, and Alphaville partner Sean
Daniel are aiming to find feature projects reflecting the college
experience along the lines of 1978's hit comedy "National Lampoon's
Animal House." Daniel was the Universal exec who oversaw "Animal House."
"This
deal is just a scam to get our names listed on IMDb," joked Ricky Van
Veen, one of the four founders of the site. "What better person to get
into the movie business with than the guy who brought together the
National Lampoon with 'Animal House'?"
Fool's gold
The
six-year-old Web site, professing to be "Your Source for Nothing,"
specializes in the tacky and tasteless with a preference for scantily
clad coeds, vehicular mishaps, animals in odd locations and a wide
variety of photos displaying large numbers of beer cans. For its April
Fool's Day edition, the entire site became a bogus promotional vehicle
for Philip Morris, with such features as "smoking success stories" and
Lindsay Lohan as "cool smoker of the day."
Daniel, who produced
"The Mummy," "The Mummy Returns" and "The Scorpion King" with partner
Jim Jacks, said the alliance with the Web site can lead to multiple
features given Paramount's stated desire to seek younger-skewing fare.
CollegeHumor.com
signed a book deal with Penguin a few months ago, with the
"CollegeHumor.com Guide to College" expected to be released in April.
Site also operates a comedy tour.
Daniel, Jacks and Van Veen will be producers on the first project. Exec VP Brian Witten and Marc Evans are overseeing for Par.
